Just to test the theory of beauty based on symmetry, fashion photographer Alex John Beck decided to take photos of ordinary people then making versions of each person’s face as symmetrical as possible. His method involves using the left side of the person’s face first and then trying the right side, next. The test results of the photographer are extremely surprising, to say the least; at other times, they’re utterly disturbing. The truth is, in some versions, upon seeing them, the subjects felt embarrassed and discomfited. Alex John Beck shared some of the photos here. The photographer took pictures of each subject and grouped them into left and right side of the face. Then he mirrored every one of them to make symmetrical portraits of each.
Based on the sessions’ results, most of the subjects’ pictures look more like a long-lost kin rather than another version of him.
People who have faces with less symmetrical characteristics are not too happy with what they saw. In some instances, even if some of the photos were flattering.
The one below is particularly disturbing to the subject. In fact, it had the same effect on me.
Some facial features become more pronounced in the symmetrical versions like this one below. The left portion of the man’s face is much thinner, therefore the symmetrical version is also thin. The right side of his face is much thicker and fuller so the result is a bigger face and fuller neck area.
Alex John Beck shared that they did their best to maintain the structural integrity of each face because they wanted all of the photos to remain realistic.
The photographer did not show the subjects’ original photos to discourage people from comparing the symmetrical versions to the original ones.
